Laser eye treatment
Laser treatment uses an intense beam of light that is directed in small spots onto the retina. There are two reasons doctors recommend patients have eye surgery
For proliferative retinopathy and
to monitor oedema (both a common symptom of diabetes)
Diabetes can cause diabetic retinopathy and therefore an increase in diabetic retinal screening has occurred. Diabetic retinopathy is a sight-threatening problem and is one of the most common causes of visual impairment in the UK.
Diabetic retinal screening occurs at Harrogate hospital but with patients from all over the district and as far as Newcastle and Hull. The cost of a new laser machine is around £80,000 and would be more efficient than the current one which means that treatment can be less painful and more efficient for the patient.
